A list of top Nigerian businessmen has been released and the list was no surprise given the impact the names involved has made in the economy of nigeria have.
The list was based on Firstly,the value of their shares held in quoted companies, secondly,the size and market share of their companies, thirdly the number of companies they own and its assumed value, fourth,the market value of their company’s brand and finally the impact of their companies on the Nigerian economy.
Despite the harsh terrain and business challenges involved with starting a business in Nigeria; the successful businessmen listed below held their ground and fought their way to the top.

1. Alhaji Aliko Dangote, MFR, GCON (born 10 April 1957, Kano, Nigeria) is a Nigerian self-made business magnate, with an estimated net worth of $16.1 billion USD as of March 2013. Based in Nigeria, he is the owner of the Dangote Group, which has interests in commodities with operations in his homeland and several other countries in Africa, including Benin, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana, South Africa and Zambia.
Dangote is ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 43rd richest person in the world and the richest man in Africa.

Mike Adenuga Jr (born April 29, 1953 in Ibadan, Nigeria; full name Michael Adeniyi Agbolade Ishola Adenuga) is a Nigerian business tycoon who is regarded as one of the richest black people in the world. His company Globacom controls Nigeria’s second-largest telecom operator, he also owns stakes in the Equitorial Trust Bank and oil exploration firm Conoil (formerly Consolidated Oil Company). Forbes has estimated his net worth at $4.3 billion as of March 2012 which makes him second wealthiest Nigerian behind Aliko Dangote.
3. Femi Otedola (born 1967 in Epe, Lagos State) is a Nigerian businessman. He is the CEO of African Petroleum Plc, and appeared as one of only two Nigerians (alongside Aliko Dangote) to appear on the 2009 Forbes list of 793 dollar-denominated billionaires in the world, with an estimated net worth of over US$1.2 billion. Femi Otedola is the Nigerian President Chief Executive officer of Zenon Petroleum and Gas limited.
4. His Excellency Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu (born April 21, 1960) is an international entrepreneur and the chairman of SLOK Holding and the Daily Sun newspaper, he served as the governor of Abia State, Nigeria from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007. Prior to his election, he served as the chairman of the Borno Water Board and the chairman of the Cooperative and Commerce Bank Limited. Dr. Kalu was also a member of the Progressive People's Alliance (PPA), as well as the chairman of the PPA Board of Trustees. He also served as the party's candidate for president in the April 2007 general election.
5. The Chairman/CEO of Coscharis Group of Companies and sole distributor for BMW in Nigeria, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, has a success story filled with intrigues. Imagine a seven-year old boy going to serve as an automobile apprentice because of poverty! Who could ever have imagined the outcome of such for this Nnewi-born business tycoon?
At age four, Cosmas Maduka lost his father, and therefore started hawking bean cake (akara) and climbing palm trees before the age of five, to assist his mother. Three years later when life became more miserable, his mother had to send him to her parents to lessen the task of providing for him and the other three children. 7. Jim Ovia founded Zenith Bank Group in 1990. It has grown into West Africa's second largest financial services provider by market capitalization and asset base. He was required to step down as chief executive in 2009 after a 20-year stint following a Nigerian Central Bank directive that limits the tenure of bank chiefs to 10 years. He still remains the largest individual shareholder.
